toplhc.gif Poll Question: Are modern Australian houses too big to be sustainable? - [Add New Comment] toprhc.gif

Infrastructure - Our council and councillors are simply self serving.  Our infrastructure cannot cope with anymore people. The Island’s roads and Carparking are a huge problem, yet they refuse to fund and finish our bike tracks. Instead our Mayor says a Car Ferry in the bottom end of Cowes is his number priority. Is he brain dead? Where and how are we to park the cars that are already a huge problem on weekends without a car ferry. What our Mayor is giving us is more and more Rate rises of 10%+ every year for nothing extra in return... It time they all went!!!!!!!!   I’m all for a blockage, after the public stoning of our local members...

If everyone building a home built what they needed and not what they wanted we would have less stress, less family breakdown, less power usage and a garden for children to play and socialize in giving parents a change to get to know their childrens' friends. Instead of the young hanging around in the streets or shopping centres. Large homes mean large mortgages together with more expensive heating and cooling costs which often takes its toll on all family members.                     Regarding house block size when the plans were shown for the Shearwater Estate ( think this is the correct name) it runs along the west end of Settlement Road, the plans showed some blocks 14 to the acre when questioning the developers and planners of this this answer was given "these blocks are for people that don't themselves want a garden instead they can enjoy the surrounding parkland" with this atitude to block sizes what hope do es Phillip Island or anywhere have. It is just sheer greed on the developer's part and stupidity on the the council to allow this.

there is also a large "medium density"  area; what will that entail ! [nth east corner]
Reply: Posted by: sickoftrying on 11/03/2010
There is only a hand full of people who are trying to fight these developers on all fronts. People united will never be defeated but the apathy is killing us all. City minds making decisions for Phillip Island is leading to very ugly suburban sprawl. Everyone seems to bow to the mighty dollar. Simon Madden and VCAT need to go, they are absolutely mindless and driven by big business. VCAT has made tragic dicisions all over the state. If we want change we ALL need to be seen and heard. Get the media down to take a look and talk to the people. How many of you would be prepared to hit the main street of Cowes in protest to what is happening here in front of TV cameras?????

In all seriousness, hold off a bit. Wait and see wot the shire and police come up with on plans against unruly behaviour. If not satisfactory have a 3 way campaign.  BLOCKADE THE BRIDGE THE FRIDAY NIGHT [5pm] BEFORE SCHOOLIES STARTS. GIVE PRIOR NOTICE TO THE TV CHANNELS. DEMAND ZERO TOLERANCE TOWARDS THE DIKHED ELEMENT, THE PROVISION OF A HOSPITAL , AND CONTROLLED DEVELOPMENT. Passive protest, with blockade only lasting 5 minutes. I am organising this later in the year and will call for support at that time Then give interviews on T.V re our problems

Sorry Koala2 - As a local and permanent resident, I had to sell my home a few years ago - had planted lots of native trees including gum trees - which had matured beautifully and dearly loved by koalas.  The purchaser bought the house as a holiday home, and then to my utter dismay pulled out all the plants, cut down the trees, except for one. Gravel replaced the grass - I just hate to look at it now.   So sorry.

The Paradox of our Age.    We have bigger houses, but smaller families; more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgements; more experts, but more problems; more medicines, but less healthiness. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbour. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but have less communication. We have become long on quantity, but short on quality. These are the times of fast foods, but slow digestion; steep profits, but shallow relationships. It is a time when there is much in the window, but nothing in the room. Dalai Lama

GREED unfortunately  - my parents generation were hell bent on making sure that in the future we were all going to be better off and  it has back fired

The banks may soon decide sustainability appropriate to the ability to keep up the Mortagage repayments! What goes first - the leased car, the HP Furniture, the Holiday House, the School Fees or the "Home"? - Perhaps it goes to the Family Law Court and let them sort it and the Solicitors have a cut too!!

Here are the statistics from late 2009: The typical size of a new Australian home hit 215 square metres in the past financial year, up 10 per cent in a decade, according to Bureau of Statistics data compiled for Commonwealth Securities. US figures show the size of new American homes shrinking from 212 square metres before the financial crisis to 202 square metres in September. New homes in other parts of the world are far smaller, with Denmark the biggest in Europe at 137 square metres and Britain the smallest at 76 square metres. Obviously the smaller the house, the easier to heat, light, cool, get around in, etc. No wonder Australia has the 2nd highest per capita greenhous gas emissions of any country apart from the US!

The more people have, the more they want.....thats why family values have gone out the window. We managed to save, while 1 parent worked and the other at home with the little ones. But that was 12-15 years ago...cost of housing wasnt so expensive then as it is now. Wouldnt want to be trying to buy a home now. But, speaking with friends who are looking to buy, they want the big house and for it to be nice. We encourage them to buy small with the thought of painting it your colour and extending when you can afford it, rather than trying to get it all at the start and having debt over your head. Each to their own, but family should come first before career, work or pleasure activities. Home is what you make of it, no matter how big or small. Some big homes are empty with love even though they have all the mod cons and accessories. It isnt what we as people need to survive. love, warmth, food and water....thats it.

With Urban Sprawl becoming a major problem I feel that we need to condense our City's and Town's. Large Blocks of land With Big Houses on them creates stress on already existing Infrastructure. By creating a shift toward High Density Housing, Governments will be able to deliver required services to a greater number of people at a lesser cost. There will always be a place and need for Big Blocks of land and Huge Houses where certain people can show of what they believe to be their Success.

OMG, with attitudes like this no wonder our beautiful country is being torn up by developers and turned into horrible high density housing......housing that makes me want to be sick just looking at it....houses that are all stuffed in together on tiny blocks. Just look at Clyde Road Berwick, or Syh Gippy Hwy Lynbrook... a few years ago it was beautiful farms and now it is a sea of houses spreading like cancer...and this 'cancer' is about to happen in Hall Road Cranbourne. Lovely land about to be covered in millions of homes plus an industrial estate. And as for Govt's being able to deliver required services....RUBBISH ! The only reason for this horrible type of housing taking place is MONEY....millions extra in rates for greedy councils, millions extra in taxes like land tax and stamp duty.
Reply: Posted by: Goose on 9/03/2010
OMG Erica, do you actually read comments before replying????. The word Condense means to make smaller or to minamise, I do not want Towns and Suburbs spreading all over the Country, I would like them to be kept within well set boundries. The only way to do this is to re-think our idea of how Houses and Accomadation should be delivered and set out within Town Boundries.
Reply: Posted by: john on 9/03/2010
Erica, there is only so much land for more and more people. I agree; houses are jammed together like sardines, but if everyone had an acre or two, we'd be extended out to N.Z. If they dont limit population here on P.I. it will be full of tents like a refugee camp.  I,m prepared to sit near the bridge and toss off the edge those I dont like.

John - dearest John - wouldn't it have been nice if the Aboriginals had done that pre 1788? Perhaps the American Indians, the South American Indians, the South Africans, and all those invaded by the European "advanced" cultures should have chucked the lot into the sea eh? Australia, (and quite a few other places), would have been beautiful untouched countries but you would not have been here to enjoy sweetie! Sorry - but times have changed and those solutions are simply impractical!

It's a well known fact that high density housing ends up as high density slums of the future ....so that's what we have to look forward to. I for one want to see an end to the destruction of lovely country areas to high density housing and industrial estates. We don't need huge populations of people in the country.....hell..the country can't cope now under the strain of 22 million...so how on earth is it going to cope with 30 million or the 55 million predicted within the next 25/30 years....not to mention the total destruction of plant and animal species due to the immense habitat destruction.

Yes John - but Erica - have a look around Carlton, Fitzroy, South Melbourne, Richmond, Kensington, North Melbourne and similar areas of Sydney, London, San Francisco and New York - blows your theory to smithers my dear!

Those who choose to build great monstrous houses and take out enormous morgages to do so have only themselves to blame.  Why are people so greedy these days??
Reply: Posted by: WOT on 9/03/2010
Are they greedy or just plain dumb stupid? Many are working "half time plus" to pay interest alone!! Then if they add in their Credit Card too - W O W!!!!!
Reply: Posted by: Hmmm on 11/03/2010
Have themselves to blame for what? I don't hear anyone whingeing about their lovely big home and mortage to go with it? They usually work very hard to pay for what they have, at least they are not unemployed or have an un warranted health care card and being a burden on those that work hard and pay taxes to suit.
Reply: Posted by: Capitalist? on 12/03/2010
Hmmmm ..... let's go one by one eh! Have you everconsidered ......They are too busy maintaining their facade to whige .......... They work very hard to pay interest and will probably never pay down their mortgage ...... They sell first and add to inflation, (for as long as tge system will absorb it), ............... The Un warrented Health Card is a myth ....... Go examine how to get one!!!! .......... Wait until your "up market" high flyers are unemployed ... and I reckon it won't be too long! THEN YOU WILL HEAR SOME WHINGING --- IT WILL ALL BE THE GOVERNMENT'S FAULT!!!!! AND I lend money --- NOT borrow it!!!!!!
Reply: Posted by: Hmmm on 13/03/2010
But you still haven't answered what they have themselves to blame for? That's all I want to know.
Reply: Posted by: Capitalist? on 13/03/2010
They can't be blamed for an inate lack of intelligence but they can be blamed for their lack of desire and application to research in order to know what they are doing!!

we had a town full of 1/4 acre blocks now they tell me they a 5 to an acrea ....................If you travel on the road to Melbourne near Berwick and Pakenham you see them jammed onto little blocks - they are nearly all double storey.................I say double the trouble...........no wonder when the Res bank wants to put interest rates up lots of people fall apart ........ .....I personally want my money in the bank to keep growing but then I dont have a mortage  or a great big house
Reply: Posted by: WOT on 9/03/2010
First house - top of the range 14sq "cream brick vanilla" in outback Doncaster! Mortgage - $7000.00 Joint income at that time was about $35.00/week. - about 200 times the weekly income was the Mortgage and interest was 4.5%. With a mortgage of $300K - (and the interest rate is nearly double and rising), you would need to be earing AT LEAST $1500 per week PLUS about another $300/week for extra interest to match it! I sympathsize with any young couple trying to start out on this journey!
